Mark Bain and son Lachie at Woolamai Beach

A long-time surfer of Cape Woolamai, Mark Bain joined in 2012 as a Nipper parent and went on to attain his Bronze Medallion, actively patrol and become Administration and Finance Director. His son Lachie – and soon Nathan – also patrols.

What season did you join the club?

2012 as a Nipper parent. On our first day the age manager was sick and Jason Close looked and Emma Moore and I and said you two can run the class. We looked at each other (we didn't know each other) and said “why not”. I haven't looked back since. I guess I can blame Jason for everything :)

Why did you become involved in Surf Life Saving?

To help protect the community from getting into trouble on our beautifully stunning Woolamai Beach. To provide a role model to my two boys that to be involved in a community organisation is fantastically rewarding. Additionally show them a pathway into the club and the broader movement and how it can expand their minds and open opportunities for them that otherwise would not be there. To be involved with a fabulous group of people at WBSLSC. To fulfil a life long dream to be a life saver at WBSLSC and be an irb driver

What drew you towards being a Board member of Woolamai Beach SLSC?

Am I allowed to say Jason and Michelle twisted my arm and wouldn't let me get away? After a number of years as nippers treasurer a vacancy came up for Club Secretary and I was keen to understand more about how the club worked and give more of my time and professional experience to making the club better and stronger

Who were/are your mentors in Surf Life Saving?

Jason Close, Rob Murphy, Michelle Murphy, Georgie Wettenhall

What keeps you going in your leadership journey?

The opportunities to learn more about Surf Life Saving never cease and the more I learn the better life saver I become. I really enjoy assisting the younger and newer members by passing on the skills the club has taught me and provide guidance where I can on “reading the ocean” after a very long 30+ year history of surfing at Woolamai. I never cease to be amazed and inspired by the quality of the people who patrol and give up their time protecting the public at Woolamai. The patrol captains and their patrol teams are exceptional individuals and it's a privilege to be involved with them. Young leaders of the club like Max Eldridge and Brendan Smart are clear role models and give so much of their time to support our great club. Patrolling with my son Lachie (and soon Nathan) is wonderfully rewarding as a father.
