Stafford Smith

Stafford was awarded the Order of Australia Medal on Queens Birthday, June 2019 for his service to lifesaving and education. Stafford has been involved with the club for over 20 years now, running countless camps and events. His work through Upwey High School has resulted in hundreds of new members for the Club, as well as hundreds of students learning the importance of beach safety.

Stafford has also shaped the club through his role on the Board, currently as Vice President, where he works to make effective and positive change within the club. Stafford is constantly looking for ways to make the Club a more fun and inclusive place, whether that be through social events or competitions such as Club Champs.

What season did you join the club?

I first joined the club for the 1999/2000 season, the year our first Upwey High School Bronze squad became members of Woolamai.

Why did you become involved in Surf Life Saving?

Loved the beach and I had a friend who was a member at Gunnamatta. He encouraged me to join the club and get my Bronze. Back then Bronze training involved reel and line work with 6 members in a squad having to demonstrate proficiency in all 6 rescue positions

What drew you towards being a Board member of Woolamai Beach SLSC?

I felt it was time to give back to the club after so many years involved at Woolamai. I was inspired by the number of our students undertaking leadership roles within the club and thought it would be a good link between the school and the Club.  I was convinced it was time to put my hand up following a phone call from Rob Murphy. :)

Who were/are your mentors in Surf Life Saving?

At Gunnamatta, Alex Sommerville was the person responsible for getting me involved in Life Saving and introducing  me to carnivals and the challenges of competition. At Woolamai I was inspired by Georgie Wettenhall and Brett Ellis who were the catalyst for introducing me and the Upwey program to Woolamai and for all the work and support to ensure its longevity. Over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed working with

What keeps you going in your leadership journey?

I enjoy bringing junior members through the Upwey / Woolamai Program. I love the training and share in the pride of accomplishment when they get their bronze. I love the training and share in the pride of accomplishment when they get their bronze. I am motivated to be involved in a club that offers young people opportunities to become better citizens. Quite simply I love the Woolamai Family.
