Surf Rescue Certificate

“Gain your Surf Rescue Certificate, participate in patrols, make lifelong friendships and serve our community”


The Surf Life Saving Surf Rescue Certificate is the base level of award for patrolling members. This lifesaving award requires candidates to participate as a team member in a surf lifesaving service. During the course you will learn about your responsibilities as part of a surf lifesaving team, basic first aid and emergency care skills, surf awareness and surf rescue skills.

You can go on to qualify to gain your Bronze Medallion, the core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia.

+ Course Details

  • Date: Wednesday 27th December - Saturday 30th 2023
  • Location: Woolamai Beach SLSC
  • Cost: $240
  • Participants will train and be evaluated at Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club clubhouse, end of Woolamai Beach Road, Cape Woolamai, Phillip Island.
  • Course cost includes training, evaluation and commemorative course shirt.

+ Pre-requisites

  • Be at least 13 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Have completed a 200 metre swim in five (5) minutes or less, unaided (goggles/mask permitted), over a measured open water course which will be observed prior to the candidate undertaking any water training or assessment activities. (This task will be completed on the first day at Woolamai Waters)

  • Contribute to ensuring safe work environment by following occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines
  • Describe surf and environmental conditions and hazards
  • Recognise and appropriate safe beach and zone for surf bathing
  • Demonstrate surf skills including surf swimming, body surfing, paddle a rescue board
  • Explain the functions of the systems of the body
  • Perform CPR
  • Identify patient management techniques
  • Perform basic patient management techniques
  • Communicate in the workplace
  • Perform patient approaches, supports and escapes aided by equipment on a conscious and an unconscious patient
  • Identify people in distress in an aquatic environment
  • Perform patient retrieval and support unaided by equipment and using casualty transport equipment
  • Set up a patrol and describe your role on a patrol
  • Demonstrate standard patrol practices
  • Work as part of a team

  • SLSA Award: Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC)

+ Skills Maintenance

  • The Surf Rescue Certificate must be re-qualified every year at a Skills Maintenance day run by:
    • Woolamai Beach SLSC
    • Another Lifesaving Club
    • Lifesaving Victoria
