Inflatable Rescue Boat | Driver

“The Silver Medallion IRB Driver provides participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively drive and manage an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations”


Run over two consecutive weekends, the Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Camp is a very fun and practical award to complete. The IRB camp will predominately be run at Woolamai Beach SLSC however participants can expect to train at neighboring beaches/clubs.

+ Course Details

  • The IRB Camp will be run on the following weekends:
    • Weekend 1: Friday 10th - Monday 13th March 2023
    • Weekend 2: Friday 17th - Sunday 19th March 2023

Please Note: Friday night sessions will start @ 7pm

  • Location: Various Beaches in the Bass region
  • Course costs include:
    • Accomodation & Fuel (for IRB's)
  • Course costs do not include:
    • Food & Travel Reimbursement

+ Pre-requisites

  • You must be a current financial member of Woolamai Beach SLSC
  • You must be at least 17 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • You must have a current Victorian Marine Licence
  • Hold the following SLSA awards
    • Bronze Medallion
    • Inflatable Rescue Boat Crew (for at least 12 month)

+ Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be taught the skills and knowledge to:

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of an IRB Driver, including:
  • List the duties of an IRB Driver
  • List the safety considerations when operating an IRB
  • Provide direction to an IRB Crewperson in all their operational duties
  • Communicate effectively with Crewperson, the public and patients in the normal performance of duties

Drive an IRB

  • Identify the components of an IRB motor
  • Launch an IRB safely and efficiently
  • List motor hazards in the surf
  • Safely and efficiently negotiate the surf while driving an IRB
  • Perform emergency procedures

Perform rescues in an IRB as a Driver

  • Perform conscious and unconscious patient pick-ups
  • Perform complex rescue operations including swimming rescues, sailboarder and kite surfer rescues
  • Contribute to search and rescue operations; liaising effectively with other emergency response services as required

Prepare and maintain an IRB motor

  • Perform pre-operational checks and preventative maintenance of the IRB motor
  • Perform post-operations maintenance of the IRB motor
  • Perform motor re-start procedure after submersion in the surf
  • Report major wear and damage according to organisational procedures

  • SLSA Award: Silver Medallion IRB Driver

+ Skills Maintenance

  • The Inflatable Recue Boat Driver Certificate must be re-qualified every year at a Skills Maintenance day run by:
    • Woolamai Beach SLSC
    • Another Lifesaving Club
    • Lifesaving Victoria

IRB Camp Registration

Due to limited resources and high demand, we will be conducting an expression of interest for those wishing to obtain these awards. Candidates will be selected based on a number of factors including: Involvement within the club, patrol hours and experience. Successful candidates will be emailed and asked to register online. Please use the below links to express interest for the upcoming camp.
