Inflatable Rescue Boat | Crew

“The Inflatable Rescue Boat Certificate provides participants with the skills and knowledge to effectively crew an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) in surf rescue operations”


The Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Camp is a very fun and practical award to complete. The IRB camp will predominately be run at Woolamai Beach SLSC however participants can expect to train at neighbouring beaches/clubs.

+ Course Details

  • The IRB Camp will be run on the following days:
    • Thursday 25th - Sunday 28th January 2024

Please Note: Thursday session will start at 6pm

  • Location: Woolamai Beach
  • Course costs include:
    • Accomodation & Fuel (for IRB's)
  • Course costs do not include:
    • Food & Travel Reimbursement

All candidates are required to register through Member Training Portal once invited by the training team to participate on the course.

+ Pre-requisites

  • You must be a current financial member of Woolamai Beach SLSC
  • You must be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • Hold the following SLSA awards:
    • Bronze Medallion

+ Course Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be taught the skills and knowledge to safely:

Crew an IRB:

  • List the different classes of IRB
  • Identify the components of an IRB and ancillary equipment
  • Contribute to the safe and efficient launching of an IRB
  • Demonstrate safe crewing positions while negotiating the surf
  • Perform emergency procedures
  • Observation, hazards and risks are identified and clearly communicated to the driver

Maintain an IRB:

  • Perform pre-operational checks and preventative maintenance of the IRB hull
  • Perform post-operational maintenance of the IRB hull
  • Report major wear or damage according to organisation procedures
  • Perform conscious and unconscious casualty pick-ups
  • Perform complex rescues including swimming rescues, sailboarder and kite surfer rescues.

  • SLSA Award: IRB Crew Certificate

+ Skills Maintenance

  • The Inflatable Recue Boat Crew Certificate must be re-qualified every year at a Skills Maintenance day run by:
    • Woolamai Beach SLSC
    • Another Lifesaving Club
    • Lifesaving Victoria

Australia Day IRB Crew Course

 

Due to limited resources and high demand, we will be conducting an expression of interest for those wishing to participate on this camp.

Members will be selected based on a number of factors including:

  • Club Involvement

  • Volunteer contribution (Water Safety/Patrolling requirements)

Once the Expression of Interest has closed, successful candidates will be emailed and asked to register online.
